Facial Implants, Cheek Implants in Columbus, Ohio

What are cheek implants?
Cheek implants are permanent semi-soft materials naturally shaped to rejuvenate the cheeks or midfacial area. As we age, the bone structure of our face actually shrinks leading to less prominent cheek bones. Gravitational forces and repetitive facial movements cause the cheek tissues to drop down sometimes causing deep grooves to develop. The end result is a loss of the youthful heart-shaped face and less prominent cheek bones. In addition, the soft tissues under the eyes can descend creating dark circles under the eyes.

There are several cosmetic options available to correct this midfacial aging. Early changes can be altered with synthetic fillers or fat transfer to the face. More advanced aging changes may be better solved with a midface lift or cheek implants. The latter option provides a permanent enhancement.

There are a number of different shapes and sizes of implants to fit every type of patient. In general, they are categorized according to the location that needs augmentation. Malar (high cheek bones), submalar (low cheek bone) and tear trough (dark circles under eyes) are all available.

How are cheek implants placed? Are they permanent?
Cheek implants are solid materials that are placed directly on the bone surface to create a fuller appearance. They are usually placed through a hidden incision inside the mouth on the inside of the lower eyelid. No visible incisions are necessary. Cheek implants are permanent and are difficult to feel through the face after the healing process has occurred. Most patients choose to undergo a brief general anesthetic for comfort during placement.

What should I expect during my recovery?
There is some swelling that will occur after cheek implants are placed. This can be minimized by following post-operative instructions closely, limiting activity and maintaining cool compresses on the cheeks for a few days. Swelling will disappear over one to two weeks. Pain is rare after this type of surgery and most patients just describe some general tenderness.
