Mastopexy / Breast Lift in Columbus, Ohio

What is a Mastopexy (Breast Lift)?
Over the years, factors such as gravity, pregnancy, and nursing take their toll on women's breasts. As the skin looses elasticity, the breasts often loose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. A mastopexy, or breast lift, is the surgical procedure to reshape and raise sagging breasts. A mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple.

Who is a candidate for mastopexy surgery?
The best candidates for a mastopexy are healthy, emotionally stable women who are realistic about what they can accomplish.  The best results are usually achieved in women with smaller, sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy breasts.

How is a mastopexy performed?
The techniques for mastopexy surgery vary depending on a number of factors which will be discussed during your exam. There are basically two types of mastopexy. The most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision following the natural curve of the breast. This incision outlines the area from which breast skin will be removed and defines the new location for the nipple. Sutures are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple area, and along the crease of the breast. The vertical mastopexy is a newer technique in which the incisions run around the areola and extend in a vertical line downwards from the nipple. With the vertical technique, there is no incision along the natural crease of the breast.

What size will my breasts be after surgery?
During your initial consultation, it is important to discuss your expectation frankly with your surgeon and be open to listening to your surgeon's opinion regarding your breasts.  Upon exam, your surgeon will discuss the variables that may affect the procedure such as your age, the size and shape of your breasts, and the condition of your skin. Your surgeon will measure your breasts and should be able to give you an approximation on size and shape following the exam. The position on the nipple and areola will also be discussed during this appointment.

What should I know about my results?
Your surgeon will make every effort to make your scars as inconspicuous as possible; however, you need to be aware that you will have some type of scarring following a mastopexy. The location of the scarring will depend on the technique used. The extensiveness of your scarring will depend on the condition of your skin, and other factors that will be discussed during your consultation. The scars are placed so that you can wear lower cut clothing.

How should I choose my surgeon?
No matter what type of surgery you're considering, one of the most important factors in success is the surgeon you choose. Many surgeons today are performing cosmetic surgery without the benefits of any formal training. Ask your surgeon is she is certified by The American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASPRS). Ask about her specialty within the realm of plastic surgery. Does she perform all types of surgeries from head-to-toe or is she specialized in specific areas? By asking the questions and feeling comfortable with your surgeon, you will be on your way to a successful outcome.
