Breast Reduction in Columbus, Ohio

What is a Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction, also called reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that removes excess breast tissue and skin, and lifts your breasts making them more proportional to the rest of your body. The areola (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) may be reduced and repositioned as well.

Am I a good candidate for Breast Reduction?
If you are a woman with overly large breasts, breast reduction surgery can be a tremendously life-enhancing option. Having the procedure will give you far more than just smaller, firmer breasts. You'll also get significant relief from many physical and emotional discomforts. A new sense of freedom in your exercise and physical activity and the option of wearing a wider variety of clothing should also occur. If you suffer from back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts, heavy and sagging breasts with very low nipples and areolas, indentations from your bra straps, skin irritation beneath the breasts, or a restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts you may be a good candidate for breast reduction surgery. Ultimately, upon consultation and exam, your Board certified plastic Surgeon will determine if you would be a candidate for this procedure.

How is Breast Reduction surgery performed?
The specific method for your breast reduction will be determined by your anatomy, your surgeon's preferences and your desired results.  After the surgeon has removed the excess breast tissue, fat and skin, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. The areola, which is usually larger than ideal, is also reduced in size. The nipples and areolas usually remain attached to their underlying tissue as they are moved to a higher position. This method may also preserve the ability to breast feed, although it is not guaranteed. During your consultation your Board Certified Plastic surgeon will discuss the exact location of your incisions and the expected size of your breasts following breast reduction surgery.

How will I look and feel following surgery?
Following surgery you will have gauze dressings placed on your breasts and they will be covered by a surgical bra which you will wear for 2 full weeks. Within the first week of surgery you will begin to move about more comfortably, and perhaps even return to (nonstrenuous) work. After several weeks, swelling, bruising, and normal periodic discomfort will diminish. Sensation to the nipple and areola will gradually improve, and you may return to most normal activities, including mild exercise. A few months following surgery your breasts will start to settle into a more natural shape, incision lines will begin to fade, and you will notice relief from neck, back, and shoulder pain.

Without the excessive weight of large breasts, you may find that your body will look better proportioned, clothing will fit better and you will have greater freedom to enjoy physical activities.  Although incision lines will be permanently visible, they will fade over time and can be concealed by most clothing. You can expect to maintain your new breast size unless you lose or gain a significant amount of weight or become pregnant.

How should I choose my surgeon?
No matter what type of surgery you're considering, one of the most important factors in success is the surgeon you choose. Many surgeons today are performing cosmetic surgery without the benefits of any formal training. Ask your surgeon is she is certified by The American Board Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Ask about her specialty within the realm of plastic surgery. Does she perform all types of surgeries from head-to-toe or is she specialized in specific areas? By asking the questions and feeling comfortable with your surgeon, you will be on your way to a successful outcome.
