Saline Breast Implant Deflation

What is a saline breast implant deflation?

A breast implant deflation is a break in the integrity of the implant shell. This then causes the saline to leak from the implant, thus deflating the breast. This typically occurs at a slow pace and over time the patient will notice that the implant in question is slowly getting smaller.

Is a saline breast deflation dangerous?
A breast implant deflation is not dangerous. The saline solution which fills saline implants will naturally absorb back into the body. Because our bodies are made up of a large percentage of saline, there is no harm from a deflation.

How is a saline breast implant deflation fixed?
A breast implant deflation can typically be fixed under a local anesthetic. Using the original incision, the old implant is removed and replace with a new implant. Patients over the age of 22 have the option of switching from saline to silicone filled implants once a deflation has occurred.

Is the recovery similar to breast augmentation surgery?
Because the muscle has already been divided with the original surgery, the recovery is not nearly as uncomfortable as the  original breast augmentation surgery. Patients typically take a day off to recover before returning to most normal activities.

Is saline breast implant deflation surgery costly?
At the time of breast augmentation surgery, patients are given the option to purchase an extended warranty for the breast implant manufacturer. Patients who purchase the extended warranty plan are typically covered under this policy with very little monetary expense.

How should I choose my surgeon?
No matter what type of cosmetic surgery you're considering, one of the most important factors in success is the surgeon you choose. Many surgeons today are performing cosmetic surgery without the benefits of any formal training. Ask your surgeon if she is certified by The American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASPRS). Ask about her specialty within the realm of plastic surgery. Does she perform all types of surgeries from head-to-toe or is she specialized in specific areas? By asking the questions and feeling comfortable with your surgeon, you will be on your way to a successful outcome.
