Liposuction, Smart Lipo™, Lipo Dissolve in Columbus, Ohio

Exercise is certainly the best way to burn fat and improves body shape. However, sometimes, despite exercise and weight loss we still may not be able to achieve our desired body shape. Metabolism often plays a major role in this. In some individuals, the body's metabolic rate may be genetically slower or reduced by the aging process. In either case, diet and exercise may not be enough and liposuction may be a good option for you.

What is liposuction?
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure which removes unwanted areas of excess fatty tissue that is often performed under local anesthesia . Liposuction can permanently reshape body contours where excess fat deposits create bulges or rounding in an otherwise balanced figure. It is not an effective treatment for cellulite, the dimpled skin that appears on the thighs, hips, and buttock. It is also not an effective treatment for weight loss or obesity. In fact, liposuction could be dangerous in these situations. Dr. Christine Sullivan works with her weight challenged patients to achieve their ideal weight before considering liposuction.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?
If you are in good general health, fit, well proportioned, and are bothered by excess fat deposits located anywhere on the body, that do not respond to diet and exercise, liposuction may be right for you. Ideal candidates are adults of any age range within 30% of their ideal weight and with firm, elastic skin, and good muscle tone.

Are there different types of liposuction?
There are two commonly excepted variations to the liposuction procedure. Traditional liposuction is simply the surgical removal of excess fatty deposits through the use of suction and small cannulas. The cannula is a small hollow tube, which is used to loosen the fat and suction it away. This is an outpatient procedure, and commonly done under local anesthesia. Some fat collections however, may contain fibrous tissue, which limits the effectiveness of traditional liposuction. In these cases, Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, or lipolysis, which uses Ultrasonic energy and heat to liquefy the fat and fibrous tissue, may be recommended. After the fat and fibrous tissue is liquefied, it is more easily suctioned away, resulting in a smoother contour. Traditional liposuction and Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, or lipolysis, both utilize tumescent fluid. This is the local anesthetic fluid which is infused under the skin prior to the removal of fat. Following liposuction, the overlying skin shrinks to conform to the new shape. This however takes time, and the final results aren't realized for several months. Because Ultrasound-assisted liposuction or lipolysis utilizes heat to dissolve the unwanted fat, more skin shrinkage is expected. During your consultation, Dr. Christine Sullivan will discuss your specific concerns and examine the areas in which you desire improvement. An evaluation of the skin tone and elasticity, as well as fat density and distribution will determine the most appropriate liposuction technique for you.

What is Smart Lipo?
Smart Lipo is a safe and effective new procedure. Laser energy is used to diossolve fat beneath the skin surface. Once dissolved, the liquid fat can be easily suctioned away. The procedure is performed through a very small incision resulting in limited recovery time. Smartlipo? may be able to be performed under local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia.

What is Lipo Dissolve?
Lipo-dissolve in being marketed as an innovative alternative to liposuction. It involves a series of medical injections, to dissolve unwanted small localized areas of fat. The ingredients used in lipo-dissolve may vary depending on the doctor and the area being treated. The ingredients may include phosphatidyle choline, multi-vitamins alpha lipoic acid, enzymes and plant extracts. Ingredients may also include chemical agents such non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics and hormones. Is this safe? The FDA has not approved lipo-dissolve in this country. It is under investigation and the long termed effects have not been established. Does it work? The injected medication produces a chemical reaction in conjunction with the body's physiology to dissolve localized areas of fat. However, each injection will only treat an area the size of dime or quarter. It's impractical and probably not safe to inject enough chemical to shape an area like the thighs or abdomen.

Complications with lipo-dissolve are thought to be minimal: slight bruising, infection, swelling, or an allergic reaction. However the long term effects of lipo-dissolve are still unknown. No studies have been done to demonstrate where the chemical may travel in the body and how it will affect our body organs.

How is the liposuction procedure performed?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure. All techniques require incisions near the area to be suctioned for proper infusion of an appropriately sized cannula. Once the cannula tip has loosened the excess fat, the fat is removed using a surgical vacuum or powered suction device. Your surgeon will discuss the type of anesthetic best used for the recommended type of liposuction.

Is there any aftercare involved following liposuction surgery?
Compression garments will assist during the healing process to help skin conform to the reduced body contours. The garment is worn 24 hours a day (except when showering) for four weeks and during sleep the fifth week. No air travel is permitted for 4 weeks following surgery.

What should I know about progress and healing?
It may take several months for swelling to fully dissipate. As it does, your new contours will develop. The results should continue so long as you maintain your weight and practice a healthy lifestyle that includes eating well and regular physical activity.

How should I choose my surgeon?
No matter what type of cosmetic surgery you're considering, one of the most important factors in success is the surgeon you choose. Many surgeons today are performing cosmetic surgery without the benefits of any formal training. Ask your surgeon if she is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. Ask about her specialty within the realm of plastic surgery. Does she perform all types of surgeries from head-to-toe or is she specialized in specific areas? By asking the questions and feeling comfortable with your surgeon, you will be on your way to a successful outcome.
